FooCoding: Newcomers is a course in software development run by the Foo Café Foundation. The six month program gives immigrants and newcomers the skills they need to work as fullstack web developers in Sweden.
Our ambition is to integrate people struggling to find work in Sweden into the world of tech. Professional programmers volunteer to teach the course. These mentors share their knowledge and experience with the students.
The class meets every Sunday from 11:30 to 15:30 at Foo Café Malmö, Stora Varvsgatan 6A. During the week students are expected to complete 30-35 hours of homework. Mentors are available to answer students questions during the week over a social channel.
The course is completely free. Lunch is provided and train tickets to and from the venue can be reimbursed.
The Foo Café Foundation works with graduates to connect them to our network of company partners. We arrange speed datings and meetings between students and companies looking to hire fullstack developers.
Foo Café collaborates with HackYourFuture in Amsterdam. Together with them, we develop a curriculum suitable for our students and the demands of the Swedish tech industry.
Since the start in 2017 we have supported five classes and all of the graduated students have a job.
The success of the program has made us want to open it up to more than refugees. We believe there are other unprivileged groups who could benefit from the support of a coding program.
Next Foocoding class in Malmö will start in June.
You can send your application to Baraa Hatem via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Include your name, e-mail address and educational background. Please also include a short description of why you’d like to commit to the six month FooCoding Course.
You don’t need to have a technical background - what matters for us is that you have the grit to study hard, have good knowledge of the English language and a logical mindset.
We believe in being socially responsible. That’s why we are so strongly committed to this project. But in all honesty - running Foocoding is a costly dedication for us. We need sponsors to be able to continue our work.
The project is in need of financial support - the more support we can get, the more people we can admit to our classes.
