The refugee crisis - can we 'hack' it?

FooCoding: Newcomers

FOOD: Yes

LEVEL: Beginner

Many refugees and asylum seekers across Europe struggle to find meaningful work in their new countries of residence. This can have many reasons, but limited access to further education, language barriers and the lack of a local network are just some of the factors that significantly hinder newcomers from unfolding their potential in society.

Meanwhile the job market is in short demand for motivated software developers, with tons of positions that are hard to fill - or can't be filled at all. Automation and the ever increasing importance of the digital world leave little doubt that these job markets will continue to grow disproportionally faster than most others.

Here's one solution:

The initiative HackYourFuture therefore offers free coding classes to refugees and asylum seekers in order to teach them the fundamentals of computer programming and web-development in particular. After completion of the course they guide their students towards work via their network. They argue that integration is best achieved through the work place and that empowerment for refugees comes from having found meaningful employment and being able to give back to society. A third of recent refugees in Sweden are actually graduates*; more than two-thirds of those have skills which match graduate job vacancies - in many cases simple up-qualifying of refugees is all that it takes to lead refugees into value generating jobs.

How can I learn more?

There's a lot more to be said about this exciting program, so please join us for an afternoon on Oktober 2nd where the director of the Copenhagen branch of HYF, Christopher Klüter, will elaborate on the project which originated in Amsterdam, where 30 of their thus far 60 graduates are currently employed.

Christopher will be ready to answer any possible questions and tell about the experiences of both the Amsterdam and Copenhagen branch. There will be tea, coffee and cookies.

Find out more at www.hackyourfuture.net and see a video about one of their graduates here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbxDUmVy8Qk.
