Using Python for scientific computations

Skåne Python UG

FOOD:
Yes

LEVEL:
Intermediate

Welcome to the third installment of Skåne Python User Group. Our previous meetings was jam packed, and we're going to continue our war stories so we can get to know each other a little bit better. We'll also add a new agenda item - standard module of the day.

Besides presentations there will of course be plenty of time to mingle and meet other Python developers.

Presentation: Using Python for scientific computations

I will talk about my work as a researcher, focusing on the parts related to the development of the pyParticleEst framework. It is an LGPL licensed software to assist in applying so called particle methods for solving nonlinear estimation problems, which is a form of signal processing/machine learning. I will give a quick background to why this is interesting and which type of problems you can solve using these methods. I will discuss which parts of Python that have been useful for me in this work (mainly Numpy/Scipy), and give a very brief introduction to what those are/do. I will also give my very subjective opinions about the benefits and drawbacks of using Python for this type of work.

Presenter: Jerker Nordh, Department of Automatic Control, Lund University

Jerker is a PhD student at the Department of Automatic Control, Lund University. Before returning to academia he worked with embedded systems, mainly in the telecommunications industry. During his time at the university the research has been focused on applied nonlinear estimation, and the implementation of software to assist it.

Presentation: Winning elections with Python and Django

In september the Malmö branch of political party Vänsterpartiet got it's highest results ever in the local elections, due in part to an in-house tool for organizing large-scale activism. Richard Olsson will tell us about the experiences of using Python and the Django framework in an iterative process to build a tool for political change.

Presenter: Richard Olsson

Richard is a freelance developer and "hacktivist" who in 2013 and 2014 took one year of from client work to focus on poltiics and use his powers for good.
